Roundworms are one most common parasites afflicting canines of all ages and to make matters worse, there are three different types of roundworms toxocara cati, toxocara canis and toxocara leonina. In all three cases the way a dog gets them is by ingesting the eggs. This usually happens when it comes in close contact with an animal, usually a rodent. As far as puppies are concerned, the most common way to get it is through the mother’s milk. In fact, it is even possible for them to get infected by roundworms before birth.
If the pet has been affected by roundworms, then it may show up in its feces. If the worms have hatched then they can grow to be 5 to 6 inches in length. Finding roundworm eggs will require a flotation test done by a veterinarian. However, the absence of eggs does not necessarily mean the dog is roundworm free. In most cases, if the dog has not been treated for a while, the vet will assume the dog is afflicted and give necessary roundworm treatment. This is especially true in the case of puppies. In extreme cases, the dog may even vomit out roundworms. The most common symptoms of roundworms are a dull colored coat, diarrhea, vomiting and a pot bellied appearance. Puppies may not thrive and show lack of proper growth.
Out of the different types of roundworms toxocara leonina is the easiest to get rid of. However, toxocara canis is the most difficult of them all. The most common roundworm treatment being done today involves non-prescription over the counter drugs such as fenbendazole and pyrantal pamoate. The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists recommends de-worming pets 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks. Heart worm medication should also take care of roundworms.
The above mentioned roundworm treatment does its job by forcing the worm to let go of its grip on the intestinal track. This is called anesthetizing the worm. Once it passes out of the system it will no longer survive. The eggs also get killed in the process. Worms which are dead or dying can be seen in the stool. After the first stage of treatment is done, it is recommended to do another set of treatments after two weeks. This is to safeguard against a new stage of worms that could be migrating into the pets system.
